Cooking With Children

If your anything like me your busy and don’t have a lot of time nor energy to sit in the kitchen cooking all day. On the other hand you may have a little one who cooking and baking is simply fun, it is also a great learning experience. So we have some great tips on how to help you get your dinner on the table with your little helper under foot.

I usually start by planning meals Yes it can be tough but it is possible. Then make sure there is a kid friendly easy job for them to do if they want to help that day. Like Tear apart the lettuce if were having salad or sandwiches. Or if there is something somewhat mushy they can mash or cut it with a butter knife.

Set enough time. This one for me is probably one of the hardest parts of cooking I always just do it when I have a second but when they want to help then I have to stop everything else and go with it.

Seasoning, Let them do the seasoning. I have found that when I pop a roast in the crock pot just by letting one of them sprinkle the spices they feel they made dinner and they are happy for the rest of the day.

I think this is the biggest thing is Don’t expect perfection. They are kids and may cut to big or two small the mashed potatoes may not be as creamy as you wanted But they are all still good and it makes them happy to help. Something else don’t make your child cook with you if he or she is not interested then let them go. Yes its a great learning experience they are learning math with the measuring, reading from the recipes as well as following step by step directions there so using recipes even if you make your own helps. And most important is they are learning to cook. Not to mention the bonding and the memories that you are creating. Just make sure that they are in to it. If not it makes life harder for everyone involved.
