Choking Hazards for Babies – Which Foods to Avoid
Something all parents face is deciding when to start feeding their babies solid food. You can tell babies are beginning to get interested in other foods when they watch your fork or spoon as you bring it to your mouth. However, some foods are a choking hazard for babies. Which foods are okay for babies to eat and which foods should they avoid?
Pediatricians recommend either breast milk or formula for babies until they reach at least six months of age. Doctors also have suggestions as to which foods babies less than 12 months should avoid:
How to Prevent Choking in Toddlers and Babies
No parent wants to think about their baby or toddler choking. It’s scary and fraught with feelings of helplessness. Even if you take the time to learn CPR, you can also learn how to prevent choking in toddlers and babies so you’ll never have to use that skill.
How do you tell if your baby or toddler is choking? They may try to cough but it is weak and ineffective. They won’t be able to talk. There may be noisy breathing or high-pitched sounds when they inhale. If the item is not removed they could begin turning blue or pass out.
Celiac Disease Symptoms in Babies and Children
Celiac disease is a condition that exists when a person’s body is unable to digest products containing gluten. In people who have the disease, the gluten will damage the lining of the intestine, rendering the lining ineffective at absorbing and digesting food that is consumed.
Celiac disease will not present itself until gluten is introduced into a person’s diet. It can, however, lie dormant in a person’s body until effectively triggered by an environmental factor. Babies and children with celiac disease can potentially suffer more, especially if they are unable to express their symptoms. It is possible, however, to diagnose both babies and children with celiac disease if symptoms are present and persist.
