Don’t Take Your Teen’s Outburst Personally

Your teen has just told you that they hate you. Nothing pierces a parent’s heart like those dreaded words. Don’t take your teen’s outburst personally, however. Most likely their hormones are causing them to say and do things they wouldn’t have a few months ago.

They may also be feeling unsure of themselves because of all the changes taking place in their bodies. It’s no wonder they may strike out at you verbally. You’ve probably gone through it all before – possibly saying the same hurtful things – when you were a teen, so don’t be surprised.

Tips to Talk with Your Teen about Making the Right Decisions

As a parent we want our children to make good decisions. We want them to think carefully before acting, especially if the decision they make could have dire consequences. We want to teach them the process – that means talking with your teen about making the right decisions.

Part of our job as parents is to teach our children to think for themselves. We want them to be able to learn how to look at a situation from all sides and then decide what is best for them. We also want them to think about other people and how their decisions will affect others. Our goal is to give them the tools they need so they’ll be able to make good decisions when they’re out of our homes.

Crafting With Your Teen

craftsAs you know most kids love to do craft. They are happy to make anything from paper plate animals to macaroni necklaces. But once they hit the teen years, many of them think they’re too old (or too cool) for crafting.

Crafting with your kids is a great way to bond with them, and this is especially important during the busy teen years. If you can find a craft that your teenager will find both enjoyable and worthwhile, you’ll have a much better chance of talking him or her into giving it a try. And by the time it’s completed, she’ll probably be ready to create something else. Here are some craft ideas that your teen might like to try.

Dealing with Teen Stress

As the parent of a teen I think we all forget that, the teenage years are a transitional state between being a little kid and an independent adult. It is not an easy time as many adults can tell you. The stresses experienced are very real and can have devastating consequences when they are not addressed.

Each generation has their own unique circumstances. For the older crowd it was growing up during the World Wars. Then there were the 1960s with the Vietnam and “free love.” In the 80s and 90s there was AIDS, the Gulf War, and drugs. Now, we have a combination of so many things, it is hard to name them all.
